The Extraordinary of the Ordinary

The Extraordinary of the Ordinary

In order to create projects-intervention strategies that catalyze the imagination and appropriation of space as a Learning Field. This intervention strategy will have as its design the creation of essential conditions of autonomy, mobility, ludicity and security for the collective space for children.
The problem is based on a previous work of:
– observation, analysis, in situ recognition in order to understand their needs, needs and specificities;
– understanding of the child’s ways of seeing/inhabiting this territory;
– involvement of family, community and neighborhood;

  • Inhabit the space between Architecture-Art-Design-Urbanism to create a methodology of approach to the Learning Field, focused to the development of the child.

  • Create strategies for transformation of the territory of Pevidém to integrate the population through socio-spatial actions.

  • Include the socio-spatial place of the child in the teaching of architecture, art, design and urbanism.

  • Work a planned and integrated action in the area of social, educational, cultural and urban planning, aimed at children and adults in socially deprived communities.

The Extraordinary of the Ordinary

Teaching and Research Practices

The socio-spatial place of the child is nonexistent in the teaching of architecture, art, design and urbanism. It is pressing to contribute to disciplinary repositioning and integrate this problem into the study plans. Similarly, there is also no critical body on these matters at national level.

  • Contribute to the transformation of training in the various disciplinary areas of the School of Architecture, Art and Design of the University of Minho (EAAD.UM), through the integration of the Project in the various study cycles of the EAAD.UM.
  • Promote research projects and scientific studies in the field of urban intervention, social participation and citizenship, using an interdisciplinary, multilevel approach focused on child inclusion.

The Extraordinary of the Ordinary

Project Practices

The territories of diffuse occupation entail another type of planning difficulty, but at the same time other virtualities that do not exist in large urban centers. It will be essential to create, with children, new imaginaries, in order to think of the common places as an opportunity to coexist.
The child, in his routine, rarely exercises the right to the collective space, so it is necessary to reflect on his neighborhood space and how it becomes a social place, endowed with meaning and affections.

  • Intervene for the quality of neighborhood spaces, places that stimulate imagination, promote interaction and sharing.
  • Enhance pedestrian circulation and cycling mobility in order to combat the ‘insularisation’ process.
  • Build a space of opportunity, information space, non-stereotyped recreation space.
